Hm, so for gaming there isn't any advantage it seems… Feels warmer and performs less, the CPU score on Time Spy is actually almost 1,5k points behind.

compared to the zephyrus? It's not running warmer, it's actually cooler and quieter. Performance is a little less since there's no MUX

"At the same time, I’ll also mention that the ProArt runs a little quieter and warmer at matching-tier profiles than the Zephyrus G16"

        Mistake?

        July 30, 2024 at 2:19 pm

Yep, it runs cooler not warmer. Both internally and externally. Thanks for noticing

Whisper Mode. Andrei if possible include also Blender GPU render to check how much it degrades its performance, Classroom scene is more less the standard now.

Since GPU is not has hot as CPU's at maximum power maybe the performance hit is not has important.

Done. They're a loop test designed to test once the CPU settles around 40W. Running a single test gets higher scores because the GPU starts at 60W for about 30 seconds before dropping to around 40W.

I noticed in the s16 review YouTube and Netflix videos were run at 1080p and here it was at 4k. I'm sure that reduced runtime quite a bit here.

somewhat, yes. I just leave Youtube default and it defaults at 4K for a 4K display. My battery tests aren't entirely accurate, due to how they are estimated based on energy drain, so take them with a grain of salt. I don't have the time and resources to actually leave the laptop on for 10+ hours and measure the real battery life

Many thanks Andrei. So Whisper Mode for Blender Classroom scene is 24,19 sec while 17,89 sec in Performance Mode.
It is sizable difference i just wonder what is the noise in performance mode, because in my Legion the Classroom do not push much the fans.

Not sure, but up to the levels mentioned in the article, potentially lower if you prop the laptop on a stand for better cooling. I no longer have this around.

the Legion could be a thicker chassis with beefier cooling? Not sure which Legion you're referring too

It's a bit of a weird line-up Asus has at the moment if you ask me. I looked at the Zephyrus G16 too because I'd like the lower res screen with higher refresh rate and I really, really, want an OLED (or Miniled). But apparently Asus has decided that OLED users don't need the extra ram and only bundle it with 16GB ram which is soldered.

So either I get a Zephyrus G16 HX370 with the OLED I want, but only 16GB of ram. Which is, imo, not really future proof for such a laptop. Or I'm getting the Proart P16 which has the 32GB ram I like, but a much higher resolution screen. The alternative is a Yoga Pro 9 with Miniled, 32gb, etc. but build quality is a bit less based on reviews I read.

Yeah I don't understand their segmentation either, especially the RAM part on the update Zephyrus models

I feel there is an underserved 'daytime professional/nighttime fun' market for laptops and this laptop seems to balance that well. I was in the market for a Razer Blade 14 (in Mercury to avoid the gaudy green logo) and just so happened to see this released the same day, so I gambled and placed an order for it. I’m glad I did as your review gives me some confidence in the choice.

Screen size aside and assuming the prices are identical, which would you prefer?

    • Andrei Girbea

      July 30, 2024 at 2:32 pm

The value is just better with this ProArt imo, considering the prices of Razer laptops. Not sure what you're saying identical prices?

The Blade is more compact and slightly sturdier. That should be accounted for in your decision.

The P16 is a nicer design, better inputs and overall better performance and experience (temperatures, cooling, speakers, battery life). I would favor the P16.

wdym “refined iteration” of the Zephyrus lineup? There’s literally a refreshed G16 and this is not taking it’s place

    • Andrei Girbea

      July 31, 2024 at 10:03 am

      refined in design

In your personal opinion, which do you recommend for video editing. Zephyrus G16 or ProArt P16? Both have 32GB RAM and 1TB storage. G16 is Intel Ultra 9 with a 4060. P16 is Ryzen AI 9 with a 4070. P16 is £360 more. Many say that 60hz is a deal breaker – is that a concern for video editing?

      • Andrei Girbea

        August 5, 2024 at 2:56 pm

the screen isn't that important, since both panels are excellent. I'd look into how the Ultra 9 and the Ryzen 9 AI compare in performance in the software that you're using. The AMD platform might have an advantage that would be enough to justify the price, but at the same time, certain software such as Adobe cand favor Intel platforms.

So, if something like 10-20% difference (that's just an estimation, could be higher or lower) in rendering times would matter to you, I'd look into this performance aspect. If not, I'd get the Intel model.

Here's the first review with the G16 Zephyrus and AMD.
To be honest, it's really close to your figures and lower than what you have shown with the Ultra 7/9 in several gaming related benchmarks? So main selling point seem to be cooler temps and quieter fans if you are a gamer. So sad they didn't offer it with a 4080 or 4090… I'd buy it immediately.

Do you have any LatencyMon results? Thanks

    • Andrei Girbea

      July 31, 2024 at 10:04 am

I don't. for some reason latencymon doesn't start on this laptop. I tried a couple times, nothing

As noteboockeck’s says it’s a driver issue in new AI 370 cpu’s. They did contact AMD to get an update. But it’s already almost month passed, so I was wondering if they fixed it or not… well, if there is any update will be released, you can try again

Andrei, quick question. I see your comparison with the G16. As you know, the G16 is also being introduced with the HX370. I've looked at the differences now and I could either get the HX 370 or I could get an Ultra 7 155H. Both have the same screen and same graphics card, but the price difference is a hefty 550 euros (!). To me, it doesn't seem like the difference warrants that, any thoughts?

The exact model is the QR038W vs the QR024W. Or I could go for the Lenovo Yoga Pro 9 (MiniLED) which has the Ultra 9 185H and seems to be a better performer overall and also has 32GB. I'm a bit on the fence if 16GB is going to be enough long term. I currently own a Pavilion Plus 14 with a 7840u and 16GB, which has an iGPU so some of the RAM is allocated to the iGPU. For me it's basically a decision if I want 32GB or not.

And then there's the Zephyrus G14, which is smaller, but has the 8945HS, an OLED screen and 32GB at the same price as the Zephyrus G16 with the Ultra 7 155H and 16GB of RAM. I wouldn't mind a screen that's a big bigger, however, for more workspace.

    Any thoughts from your side?

You'd have to make the choice based on what matters most to you, screen size/performance or portability. The new AMD units are expensive, but consider that they're brand new now and prices might drop at some point. That Yoga looks like a very balanced deal. I haven't personally reviewed it, but we have a review on the site

    Hi,
thanks for your great review. I am very interested in the Proart P16. How glossy is the screen? does it have some anti reflective coating? how is it compared to the G16?

    kind regards.

    • Andrei Girbea

      August 15, 2024 at 8:33 pm

i don't have the two to compare side by side, but I'd say the finishes are about the same. both glossy, standard OLED finishes

      • Sascha

        August 16, 2024 at 10:46 am

ok, because some say it is one of the glossiest displays the have ever seen. i will not work outside but i hate a display thats a mirror. Samsung has done a good job with the Galaxy book 4 Ultra and their coating.

      • Andrei Girbea

        August 16, 2024 at 6:11 pm

well, it's an OLED and it is glossy. I haven't experienced any Galaxy Book laptop recently so can't compare

Thanks to the author for such a thorough review.

I thought about upgrading my 15.6" ASUS ZenBook to the 16" ProArt, but I likely won't because my ZenBook has a larger keyboard AND has the separate Home, PgUp, PgDn, End buttons on the right but the ProArt doesn't. I would have to think that the ProArt is a slightly larger machine (i.e. 16" display) so why lose the keys on the right AND shrink the keyboard. Once you get used to a nice keyboard it's hard to change.

It looks like ASUS is pinching pennies to me.

    Hi!

Thanks for the review. I im trying to look for a spare charger but I couldn’t find anything near me.

What If I don’t use the provided charger and only rely on usb-c charging… In the long term how does this affect the laptop?

Im thinking of using this at home and my workplace, I don’t mind it not having full performance as its fast enough for my workflow.

    Thank you!

    • Andrei Girbea

      August 22, 2024 at 9:37 am

no issue, it just won't perform at its best. the top profiles are only available with the main charger plugged in. on USB-C power, it would perform more or less like on the Silent profile discussed in the article. I'd get an ROG USB-C 100w/135W charger if possible

HI,can we decrease display resolution to 2.5 or 2.8k?4k is alot for me and i prefer longer battery.2-does display support 120hz?

    • Andrei Girbea

      August 30, 2024 at 9:56 am

you can decrease the resolution but that's not doing what you want, in fact it will make the content look fuzzy without any benefit. The panel doesn't do more than 60 Hz either.

Look into the the Zephyrus G16 for a 2.5K 240Hz panel.

        September 9, 2024 at 9:57 am

that my question is also.I really thinking about this laptop but only complaining is 4k display.so if I change the resolution in display option and choose 2.5k Will I have exactly the quality of the 2.5k g16 laptop? the g16 is great but this laptop is touchscreen too

    Andrei,
I decided to go for the ProArt P16 thanks to your revier and had a few comments:

#1 – The Micron 2400 is the drive being shipped. I did add a Crucial T500 2TB drive as the primary drive and reinstalled Win11 (fresh install) and began to run into a few issues that may help people moving forward.

#2 – Laptop ships with 24H2. If you do a standard windows re-install, 23H2 is the latest version as of Aug 30, 2024. I had to sign up for the developer preview and hope it rolled out to me (it did after a few days). You can also download the ISO directly from MS but it's still in insider preview.

#3 – On 23H2, the built-in webcam DOES NOT WORK. I thought I had unplugged it by accident when adding the SSD but I looked at the teardown manual and the touch display and webcam share the same wire. The touch was working so it eliminated that as a potential issue. I downloaded the driver from Asus support website but it did not work. I tried getting the HardwareID/part number and tried drivers from other laptops that use the same webcam, it did not work. The 24H2 update made it work.

#4 – The OLED is pretty. I came from an 14" M3 Max (disliked MacOS), and I prefer this screen.

Overall, I really enjoy this laptop. I was looking for something professional, powerful, and not too big or small. This hits all the marks. Battery life isn't the best, but I'm plugged in 90% of the time and my 65W charger does a decent enough job for overnight charges when traveling.

    Thanks again Andrei and team!

Thank you for your feedback! Interesting finding about the Windows update and camera.

Not sure what's the issue with battery life, it should be better with light use, but it's not on either the P16 or the two G16s that I tested recently. In comparison, the Zenbook S16 runs more efficiently with daily use and streaming, so I'd reckon it's a matter of optimization that could hopefully be addressed on the Zephyrus/Proart units.

    Hi grat review.

Do you recommend this P16(rtx 4070, 64ram) for architecture? I'm looking for something portable but powerful enough to make 3d on Rhino or Revit and render in heavy programs like Lumion, editing in PH, etc. But I see a lot of similarities with the Zephyrus G16(i9 rtx4080, 32ram) it's the same price but the g16 has a better rtx card but less RAM and storage.

Overall I love the design of the P16 and don't care about the 60hz i have one laptop with 240hz never felt the difference, and I think is interesting the Dial Pad, not a fan of that light on the back of the G16.

I will appreciate your help deciding thanks.

      September 3, 2024 at 11:12 am

the P16 is a more powerful CPU with more RAM, but only a 4070.
The g16 is an Intel Core CPU with less RAM, but a more powerful 4080 and better cooling. Tough choice.
I don't know the exact requirements of the software you mentioned, you should know if a better CPU and more RAM would make more sense over a better GPU. Probably would?
